Production update
over 3 years ago – Sat, May 29, 2021 at 11:15:27 PM

Finally after waiting for the manufacturer to rectify the dual layer board’s drift problem, wrong dice size, missing token sheet, we are moving forward with the main production run.

🌲 Because of the factory taking three weeks off work for Chinese New Year and the delay for addressing the sample’s issues, I need to be transparent that we are looking at a late June delivery instead of mid May.

🐺 I appreciate your understanding with this small and unavoidable delay. On the bright side, I played a solo game of Backwoods with the prototype and man it looks good on the table and plays even better.

🦝 The first endeavor of brave Joseph ended by dying of thirst three days in. The second was a triumph after a tough series of early encounters. The game is full of devastation and comeback moments and I can’t wait for you to experience it soon!

Backwoods production sample
over 3 years ago – Sat, Apr 10, 2021 at 11:12:26 PM

We've finally received the proof/sample from the manufacturer. Here are some highlights-

Box quality is terrific. It feels great, the lid comes off just right, and the colors are pretty.

There will be a small update to the back of box, such as the old promo image being updated.

The deluxe art print colors are quite satisfactory.

With such a wilderness theme, this gorgeous spread was suitable on an RV table.

The meeples are sturdy and do not fall easily.

These are some of the best cards in terms of quality, feel, and color accuracy I've seen.

The dual layer boards will need some adjusting. The manufacturer obviously had a drift issue with this set sent to me (on the right columns) and I will adjust the diamonds to be smaller as it seems they turned out a bit large for 8mm cubes. But wow, the thickness, finish, and everything else is very nice.

Example of the drift problem I'm hammering out with the factory. My template was comprised of flawless diamonds overlaying each other, so it must have been a print issue.

The insert design is handy yet simple. it holds the components well.

these tokens, as well as most of the cardboard and cards in the game, have a nice linen.

The factory sent me the wrong sized dice (suppose to be d10) they have been notified.

This manual feels and looks great.

Really really happy with how the colors are translating from the files to life.

Other notes: Somehow, the manufacturer forgot to send me the canvas bag and the Daily Actions large card (size of the art print). But since I've seen the photos of their canvas bag quality, I'm not concerned. The Daily Actions card will be an even better quality than the Art print as it will be Black core card stock, so I have no reason to worry since the comparable product already received is already exceeding my expectations. I will continue to keep you guys updated, but things are really shaping up as we head towards hitting the button on the big print run in late March/early April.

Thanks for being with me on this journey.

Truly,

Ryan

Manufacturer proof sample is about to be sent
over 3 years ago – Mon, Mar 15, 2021 at 12:21:27 PM

Hello again pioneers. It's finally starting to look like spring around central Washington, although there are still snowy peaks on the Cascade mountains that surround my town. This chilly, yet slowly thawing part of the year is the time setting for Backwoods. As life begins to hasten in Spring, so too is the production of Backwoods after the freeze that was Chinese new year where the factories across China shut down for 2 weeks. Now the manufacturer has provided pics of some components in the soon-to-be-shipped proof sample, most of which I'm happy with, but some I already see will need to straighten out (literally, those dual layer cuts need to be corrected).

Here they are. Happy day.

Ryan

Manufacturing update
over 3 years ago – Mon, Mar 01, 2021 at 06:13:33 PM

The manufacturer and I have painstakingly hammered out every detail to make sure a sample/proof can be made with accuracy. We are in the production queue for this sample and are hoping to have it finished before Chinese New Year. Even if it is made after the new year, it will only delay the process about a week and we are ahead of schedule. Here is a preview of the quality components from our email dialogue with the manufacturer- we're going with a canvas bag for the proof and will see how it feels when it arrives:

Manufacturing Partner
almost 4 years ago – Mon, Jan 04, 2021 at 06:39:20 PM

Greetings, Pioneers. And happy 2021!

I had previously been working with a manufacturer, who although reputable, was quite backlogged with pending projects. It wasn't made apparent to me until progress started to halt in hammering things out. The needed documents on their end started to take weeks, even a month to be sent to me. Thankfully we were still nailing down our agreement so Backwoods is free to move to another manufacturing partner. And that's what I did.

I hunted down one of the most highly reviewed manufacturers (made Everdell, for example) and we got to work hashing out the quote and nailing down project details. They were lightning fast and we have signed with them and look forward to this sturdy partnership. I am sending them all art files this week to begin proofing with them. This whole ordeal has actually been a minor bump in the road and we are still on schedule to begin distributing copies to you wonderful folks in May. I just wanted to update you guys about what's been going on recently with me. I hope 2021 will be a splendid one for you and yours.

Cheers,

Ryan
